Baseball Math in Your Class

Bring Math into Your Class with the BBHOF

Let's go back and take another look at Earned Run Average.

Randy Johnson and John Smoltz have a very similar ERA. Johnson has allowed 1461 earned runs in 4039 1/3 innings while Smoltz has allowed 1229 earned runs in 3395 innings. Whose ERA is lower?

A: Johnson, by .003 of a run per nine innings.

Explanation: Johnson has recorded 12118 outs (4039 x 3 = 12117, plus one out). So set up a ratio, where x over 1461 earned runs = 27 outs over 12118 outs. 1461x27 = 39447. Divide 39447 by 12118 and it equals 3.2552.

Do the same thing with Smoltz: x over 1229 = 27 outs over 10185. 1229x27 = 33183 divided by 10185 = 3.2580.

Great Idea!

I use to sell Medical insurance but got into teaching a couple of years ago because Ithought I could "do better" than the teachers my kids had. They were boring an unimaginative. This idea is great and an excellent example of the kinds of things I try to do in the classroom. Thank you for sharing!

We do offer an education program entitled "Batter Up" either on-site or through videoconferencing. Click the link to see the online thematic unit.

Here we are using daily box scores, found in newsp… Continue
